- The Upanishads means “a sitting in front of” and were written as dialogues helping to explain the Vedas and counter the religious arguments it raised.
- It taught an individual soul was born into the world repeatedly and that the objective was to achieve a permanent union with Brahman to escape the cycle of rebirths.
- It was believed that if one lived a good moral life, he would be reincarnated as a person in a higher caste system status; likewise, one would become part of a lower caste level if he lived a bad moral life.
- Doctrines were written to explain the purpose of Upanishads, some of which were known as Samsara. They explained that a soul would temporarily travel to the World of the Fathers before coming back to the physical world.
