Why Is So Little Known About Harrappan Society?
- The reason so little is known about the Harrappan Society is believed to be because of the invasion of the Indo-Europeans. They are known to have destructed the culture of the people in this society.
- The lack of writing, while other civilizations had many texts that – once deciphered- granted us insight and an understanding of their societies, the Harrappan had very few sources and texts. This hampered our ability to learn much about this civilization, scholars have yet to read and translate their language.
- In some other instances, few artifacts have been discovered within their ruins, leaving us disconnected to certain aspects of their lifestyle.
What Do We Know About the Nature of This Society?
- However, we know that the Harrappan society was established near the Indus River and used irrigation to help strengthen their agricultural society.
- The rich and poor varied significantly from one another as well (ruled by class).
- They had different sized houses along with advanced water and sewage systems.
- They had very orderly urban communities and they seemed to be fairly non- military society.
